Mrs Beeton’s Victorian Masterchef

Today, we have been cooking some of Mrs Beeton’s vegetable stew. We selected our own ingredients from a choice of onions, carrots, celery, leeks, kale and spinach. Most of them are from the UK and are seasonal vegetables.

Looking on the packaging, we could see that the spinach and celery was from Spain and discussed how cheap they are even though they have traveled from Spain and used a lot of fuel to get here.

After selecting ingredients, we learnt some basic knife and cutting skills and practiced julienne, chop, dice and finely chopping. We then decided how to chop our own and think about texture (crunchy or soft), taste, colour and shape of our ingredients.

We had a recap of hygiene and what cross-contamination means and sang a quick song about washing your hands!

Finally, we cooked each team’s stew in class and evaluated them.

Mr Barnes came in and tasted Mr Cooper’s final 2. After much thought, Mr Barnes decided that Crazy Apples stew won on texture and taste, congratulations.

Victorian printing: Wallpaper

For the past few weeks (with Mrs Holmes), we have been learning about how printing developed through the Victorian period and wallpapers were created.

We have designed and created our own wallpapers creating stencils and printing; overlapping if we could.

Here we are hard at work and the finished products hanging from our classroom.

Homework: Famous Victorians

Wow! Some of the homework this week was amazing and we had to show it off 🙂

Many of us chose to sketch or create a piece of art about a famous Victorian including Charles Dickens and Her Majesty herself.

Spellings: -ough

Here are this week’s spellings with many common words here so we agreed there should be some great scores next week! The Y5/6 words might catch some of us out though, so take a look…

bought, fought, brought, thought, rough and tough

Y5/6 words: controversy, correspond and convenience

Wake and Shake: Duran Duran

The past 2 weeks, we have listened to Duran Duran each morning. We started using some of our ‘Boxercise’ moves from PE as well!

Duran Duran received some mixed reviews by our class. A lot of us weren’t that bothered about their songs but ‘Wild Boys’ was a favourite.

Songs: Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, Wild Boys

Who has the Victorian X Factor?

Linking with our English learning journey, we have researched and created posters about famous Victorians to compete against each other and win the X Factor!

Each group presented their contender and went head to head with another (the full tournament can be seen below). After hearing their ‘performance’, the class voted (with reasons) who they believed to be more significant and influential.

The winner was…Thomas Barnardo! An influential man who started a charity for children in need and poverty; he provided nearly 9,000 children with suitable aid and shelter.

Y5 Victorian Trip: The Old Classroom

Here are some photos from our amazing day at The Old Classroom in Barnsley.

Miss Sharpe was there to greet us and we were transformed into children from 1883. The names and family backgrounds were all of real people; it felt as if we were helping them come to life!

We experienced a lesson at wooden desk and children were told off for telling tales and someone had their fingers clamped for being a ‘fidget’.

Through the day, we played with Victorian toys and learnt to write with ink. We helped with washing!

Wake and Shake: George Michael

Last week, a lot of us recognised the songs before the artist was even mentioned!

We have also started to realise how many of our Wake and Shake artists are no longer with us. Doesn’t mean we can’t still love their songs 🙂

Songs: Faith and Freedom
