Wake and Shake: The Bee Gees

This week, we were listening to some great songs by ‘The Bee Gees’ including ‘Staying Alive’ and ‘Night Fever’.

Did you know that ‘Staying Alive’ is the right rhythm to perform CPR, so – if you know the tune – push down on every beat!

The Bee Gees were famous for their disco sound, and we strutted our stuff this week; there was even a dance off!

Wake and Shake: Avicci

As a tribute to the passing of a very current, popular and successful artist – Avicci – we have taken a look at some of his songs this week. Because he was also a producer, some of us didn’t realise how many songs he had actually made!

Songs – Wake Me Up, The Night, Levels, Lonely Together (ft. Rita Ora), I Could Be the One

We also used some of his lyrics in Reading lessons (Wake Me Up and Hey Brother).

Wake and Shake: Ed Sheeran

We looked at a more recent musical artist for Wake and Shake this week and one that the majority of the class really liked.

Artist: Ed Sheeran

Songs: Sing, Galway Girl, Nancy Mulligan (in Reading lesson)

Here is the video of his cover ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ which is a good example of his ability to use a loop pedal and layer up his sounds. Notice it’s just him; not a guitar in sight!

Reading: ‘Wonderwall’ Wake and Shake

Our Wake and Shake artist is Oasis, so in our Reading lesson we took a closer look at the lyrics to the song ‘Wonderwall’.

Our task including what the meaning of the word ‘wonderwall’ could be, who the song could be for and what ‘all the roads are winding’ could mean.

It was a lesson with a lot of opinions and ideas!

What do you think the song means? Leave a comment and let us know 🙂

Today is gonna be the day
That they’re gonna throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realised what you gotta do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

Backbeat, the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I’m sure you’ve heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don’t know how

Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they’ll never throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realised what you’re not to do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

And all the roads that lead you there are winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don’t know how

I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
you’re gonna be the one that saves me
you’re gonna be the one that saves me

Wake and Shake: B*Witched

Last week, we tried a little bit of Irish dancing when listening to B*Witched! We all agreed the video is very cheesy and very 90s 🙂

Songs: Cest la Vie and Blame it on the Weatherman

Wake and Shake: Madness

Madness was quite a well known band this week with a lot of us naming some of their songs! We also found out that Mrs H was a huge fan when she was younger!

Songs: One Step Beyond, House of Fun, Our house, Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love

Wake and Shake: Duran Duran

The past 2 weeks, we have listened to Duran Duran each morning. We started using some of our ‘Boxercise’ moves from PE as well!

Duran Duran received some mixed reviews by our class. A lot of us weren’t that bothered about their songs but ‘Wild Boys’ was a favourite.

Songs: Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, Wild Boys

Wake and Shake: George Michael

Last week, a lot of us recognised the songs before the artist was even mentioned!

We have also started to realise how many of our Wake and Shake artists are no longer with us. Doesn’t mean we can’t still love their songs 🙂

Songs: Faith and Freedom

Wake and Shake: The Beatles

After our Children in Need ‘Rock Day’ last week, we decided to take a closer look at John, Paul, George and Ringo! The Beatles!

Songs: Can’t Buy Me love, I Want to Hold Your Hand, A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Helter Skelter, Eleanor Rigby, I’ve Gotta Feelin’ and Let it Be.

Wake and Shake: Spice Girls

Last week, we all listened to the Spice Girl’s ‘Spice Up Your Life’. We loved dancing to this one because it sounded very carnival like.

We learnt that they had nicknames as well! Scary Spice, Baby Spice, Posh Spice, Ginger Spice and Sporty Spice. They did lots of songs and we will visit them again later this year.

Wake and Shake: ABBA

Over the past 2 weeks, we have been listening and dancing to ABBA! We all knew quite a variety of their songs already due to the very popular musical and film, Mama Mia!

Songs: Mama Mia, Money Money Money, Waterloo and Does Your Mother Know?

Wake and Shake: Michael Jackson

Shamone! This week we listened to Michael Jackson after learning about his childhood in Jackson 5 last week.

We listened to: Thriller, Beat it, Bad, Black or White and Smooth Criminal as well as watch some of his iconic videos!

Wake and Shake: Jackson 5

This week’s Wake and Shake was Jackson 5! We looked at Michael Jackson and his brothers. He was born in 1958 and the band was formed when he was just 8-9!

Songs: ABC, I Want You Back, Blame it on the Boogie, Rockin’ Robin

Wake and Shake: Elvis Presley

This week we went a bit Rock n Roll and listened to the King of Rock himself! We went back to the 50’s and listened to some Elvis. We learnt that he went into the American Army, he lived in Graceland, Memphis, he sang the first Rock n Roll song ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and he was a very handsome man!

Songs: Blue Suede Shoes, Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock

Wake and Shake: The Beach Boys

We’re really starting to enjoy Wake and Shake and are pleased to hear that people viewing the blog enjoy it too!

Artist: The Beach Boys

Songs: Surfin’ Safari and Good Vibrations

Wake and Shake: S Club 7

Every morning, we are starting to do something called ‘Wake and Shake’. We do this to wake our minds up and shake our body awake! Each week we are going to learn new musical artists.

This week’s artist: S Club 7
